MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Grapevine wreath, handmade or purchased
- Large "branch" from a palm tree
- 3 l/2 " square block of dry
foam
- 3 chenille stems, brown
- 3 yds. ribbon of your
choice (French
wired ribbon works well)
- 5 " length of covered wire or
chenille stem to make the
bow/streamer
- 9 dried magnolia leaves(could
be glycerinized also)
- 12 stems of wheat and/or
barley, 7 to 9 dried teasels
- 5 wood piks, or wooden skewers
- 5 pheasant feathers, purchased
at a craft store
- Any pod or dried plant
material that may be inserted,
in keeping with the color harmony you've chosen ... this wreath is done
in all earth-tones
A bow fashioned of door screen and sprayed with
copper-colored spray paint would also work well(Shown here on a wreath
made of bittersweet gathered on a recent trip to the mountains of
Western
North Carolina, just the essence of simplicity).
DIRECTIONS:
Start with the grapevine wreath - lay it
flat on a
stable surface, so it's easy to work with. Then, break off sprigs with
black berries from the palm "branch" .
Tuck
them
into
the
wreath, at random, in any and all
directions. Make sure the wreath is well-covered and full, as
thickly-covered
as you can make it. Don't neglect the inside rim, and also the outer
perimeter.
NO GLUE IS NECESSARY.
Be
sure
you've
added
a twisted chenille stem through
the back of the wreath as a hangar. A "storebought" one will probably
come
with a hangar. Use a brown chenille stem to blend in, if making
one.
Also, be sure you remember to check as to which is the TOP and which is
the BOTTOM before adding the decorative trim unit! This is a
pitfall
for all of us who create and design wreaths !
Next,
begin
to
affix/insert
the stems of dried materials
into the dry foam block.
(Note: an IGLU filled with dry foam
could be used.)
Radiate outward from the center.
Use wooden piks to bunch the wheat
together in small
groupings, as wheat stems are fragile. If you work carefully, you
can simply insert the individual wheat stems in separately.
Fashion
a
bow
or
half-bow with streamer, and place
onto a wood pik. Insert the pik carefully into the foam block, at a
slight
angle. I've place my decorative at the top left "corner", but it could
be place at the center top, or center bottom, just as well.
Carefully,
after
joining
3
brown chenille stems together
into one long one, go up and
under the bow, across the foam block and
through the
other materials, position the
decorative unit up against the wreath,
wrapping the
chenille stem around to the back, pulling hard and wrapping the
chanille
stem TIGHTLY to attach.
I've
chosen
to
do
this wreath in muted, subtle colors
- but if you want a brighter, bolder look, add a splash of drama with a
bow made of a tapestry pattern, or seasonal plaid or print, in vivid
colors.
Step back, and admire your handiwork. You've
created
a "FLORIDA FRIENDLY" Fall wreath. A wreath that uses native materials
and
that just says, in a beautiful way, "WELCOME" to friends and family in
this GLORIOUS SEASON. |
